Hello everyone/anyone!!!

I am very excited to have been added to the prestigious list of bloggers on NPI Center.  They are such a well respected and centric website to our industry...

Given this is my first entry, I am excited to begin to communicate in this somewhat informal way with any of you who wish to discuss ANY facet of the beverage business.  As some of you know, I am considered a 'beverage expert' and as such, have about 35 years of experience in everything from production/formulation thru retailer distribution...

So without blabbing on, let the blog begin and look forward to hearing of your thoughts, questions, and be as direct as possible, given my style is very direct as well...

talk with you soon... until then, hope you are doing and staying well!!

best, Jim

Re: I am finally going live with my Blog...

Congratulations for joining the blogosphere, Jim! In anticipation of your talk at Nutracon 2009 and my question about Nutrition Facts panels on functional beverages, you said "... the issue is that the gov’t doesn’t require, and moreover doesn’t allow the space to elongate the panel to include many of the nutrients to which you refer… in order to standardize the look and presentation on labels, one would have to use the ‘romance panel’ on the side of the bottle/can to talk nutrient values… many brands don’t, of course, and that is an opportunity..."Questions1. in your experience, which performs better: art and branding, or a solid nutrient list with high % DVs? This is another way of asking what the consumer really responds to.2. can a good nutrient list substitute for any structure/function claim?3. expand please on the 'romance' panel and its optimal contentBlog on!Paul

Paul,

The natural food consumer and trade is really the best place to attract 'real label readers'... outside of that, in the FDM markets, most consumers fail to take the time or make the time to read many labels... that is why the 'romance panel' speaks to folks in a manner that 'should' explain the features and benefits of the product offering... unfortunately such as with products like Vitaminwater and the like, many comment-marketing hype- takes the license to stretch the truth and or embelish the benefits, and consumers need to talk stock of this issue and not be so easily persuaded by hyperbole and mis-characterization...

As far as the DV's are concerned, i wholeheartedly support more is better in terms of information sharing on the product label is concerned... the more consumers really know FACTUALLY, the better informed purchase decision they can make, right!!!

thanks for asking, and see you in Anaheim...

Jim
