This morning, I was once again on the NPIcenter front lines, picking up a few phone calls from viewers who had located the site, interested in finding suppliers of products and services. he questions, 'how do you tell' or 'how do you know' while sometimes unspoken, are a key feature of most of these conversations, and represent serious problems that hinder indsutry growth and product adoption.

Next week, I'll be off to Vancouver for CHFA's Expo West, to talk about one of the subjects I'm passionate about- supplements and NHP's and sports, specifically their use by elite athletes. Over the past six years that I have been working on this issue, much has changed and the prospects are good for more collaboration and positive outcomes in the future. However, the truce is fragile,and one huge substantiated blow-up will destroy a lot of the progress occuring.

Had some time to kill waiting for an appointment and got started on one of the items on my 'to read hit list'. The book, The New Rules of Marketing , by David Meerman Scott had originally appealed to me in the context of social marketing, but it quickly became apparent that the scope encompassed pretty much most business communications.

It's that time of year again. Yes, of course Expo West, SupplyExpo and Nutracon are around the corner, but immediately following (two weeks later) is the Natural Products Association Lobby Day. The day is touted as "a day of education, advocacy, and celebration" and the description is pretty apt. Always an important industry endeavor, this year has the potential, with so much change and new people aboard in Washington, to be industry defining.

The headline reads, "Dietary Supplements Declared Dangerous", an attempt to put in perspective FDAs latest bulletin about undeclared drugs found in a supplement product. In another case, it's "Supplement Banned by MLB Readily Available at Vitamin Stores". Certainly to the media positioning stories for maximum effect, and unfortunately, to the many consumers relying on these media for 'information', it's the 'evil' supplement industry at it again.
